Meet our team of instructors that are on the ice and off ice with the students.

Matt Varnes

Head Instructor

Phys Ed. Teacher

Matt is a certified teacher in Winnipeg and instructor at Churchill Hockey Academy since 2018. Matt graduated from the University of Winnipeg with a Bachelor of Physical Education along with an education degree. Matt had a successful hockey career playing junior hockey in Winnipeg before playing professionally in Kemi, Finland and Knoxville, Tennessee. After playing, he continued to share his love for the game by coaching and developing young athletes. Matt has coached in several different programs including both male and female high school hockey, Max Hockey and Bar Down Hockey Academy. Matt specializes in teaching edge work, deception, and puck protection. Matt is passionate about the growth and development of all young hockey players and continues to develop and expand his own knowledge of the game.

Jesse Klymm

Head Instructor

Phys Ed. Teacher

Jesse is a certified teacher in Winnipeg School Division and has worked at the Churchill Hockey Academy since 2023. After playing in the MMJHL for 4 years, Jesse continued coaching at the high school level and U13 Spring Hockey. Before teaching at Collège Churchill High School, Jesse taught elementary Physical Education and Health for 6 years and developed a learn to skate program for his schools. Jesse is currently the Head Coach of the Boys High School Hockey Team at Churchill. Jesse prides himself on his ability to make connections and relationships with all of his students on and off the ice.

Nico Labossiere

Head Instructor

Phys Ed. Teacher

Nico Labossière is a certified teacher in the Winnipeg school division. Nico is also a former four-year player of the MJHL who finished his playing career with the University of Manitoba Bisons. Nico is also a skating/strength and conditioning coach. Nico combines his extensive hockey background with fitness expertise to help athletes elevate their performance both on and off the ice. Passionate about coaching and teaching, Nico is dedicated to fostering growth, discipline, and success through the game of hockey.
